Hoppy Easter and Polka Dots For Marysville

Hi ya all and Happy Easter!!!

I got a lot done today.  Joy and I even walked nearly a mile and picked up more than a 13 gallon trash bag of smashed cans!  YAY!!!

I didn't think of this when I did it ,,, but after I downloaded the pictures I realized I made Easter Egg Flowers!

Check out all the goodies I made today for the upcoming Marysville Spring Garden and Craft show Saturday, April 13th.

I'm hoping the rust will come through the
spray paint soon.  CRUSTY!!!

The finials on the polka dot flowers are from the day bed I found on the road a month or so ago.  They sure came in handy!!!

I cut these out free hand, then spray painted them just
to see what would happen.  I LIKE 'EM!!!

Metal roofing, Copper Fluted Plate, Fan Cover, Camping Popcorn Popper, Lamp Part, Electric Engine Part, Rebar.

Side view.  Lots of texture and color!

Close up.

Metal roofing, fan cover, vintage metal flower pot,
vintage flashlight, rebar, sewer snake.

Side view.

Bottle Tree.

The garden on the north side of my house!  FUN!!!

WOW!  I did get a lot done today.  I need to keep this up.

What do you think of the polka dot flowers???  I'm thinking of making them so you can hang them on a fence or wall, indoors or outdoors!  HUM ....  !!!!  Could be tons of fun!

Have a great holiday.

A Few Bird Houses and How To Pick Them Up

Hi guys!

OH!  Thanks Dana for reminding me.  I just found out I did get accepted into Sorticulture.  For those of you who don't know ,,, Sorticulture is an amazing, energy filled garden art show here in Everett June 7, 8 and 9.  When you say Sorticulture think any thing that can go in a garden.  I like to say sort a horticulture.  Plants, art, tools, etc.  Plus food, wine, beer, lattes, music, speakers and lots of entertainment!

Well!  I goofed off a little with a couple quick and simple bird houses.  These aren't fancy or outrageous.  They're just simple little houses to hold some birds.

Many years ago that was just about all I made.  They were fun, funky and most importantly ,,, they actually attracted birds.  YAY!

These little guys were just a warm up to see if I could remember how to make them.  Right now these are at We Do Art in Everett for just $20 each.  I'll make a few more soon to take to the Marysville Spring Garden and Craft show coming up April 13th.  Those should be bigger, funkier and hopefully they'll draw in some birds too.

SO!  Here's the 5 I made!

Waiting for new home owners.

3 stories tall.  Yes, all 3 are separate rooms.

B is for Bird.

Handle off an old frying pan, a brass tag, a hook
and a license plate roof.

An old wood door knob, a little hook with a rose
and a license plate roof.

Glass drawer pull, sales sample picture frame corner
and a brass #6.

These were lots of fun to build, but, I can do better.  SOON!

Did you know that most birds don't even use the perch you see on most bird houses?  They just fly straight into their house.  I like to put hooks and stuff on mine so you can hang yarn and stuff on there for the birds to use in their nests.

Now!  If you've ever seen the bird houses I made in the past you would have seen some very old, fragile wood on their roofs at times.  The birds could care less what their house looks like as long as it's the size they want.  Metal isn't their favorite roof as it tends to keep their house too warm, unless you keep that one in a more shady area.  I love to make their houses look old to begin with.  I'll let others make the pretty, brand new ones.

So, when you come into my booth and promptly pick up a house by it's roof I'm probably going to yell at you!  You see ,, old wood and parts, means be careful!  Here's a couple pictures to show you how to pick up any bird house "correctly".

First:  Stick your finger inside the hole.

Then: If the roof is fragile lift it straight up.  Or like this little guy, just grab the roof to help you balance it.  You are really holding on to the house by just your finger.

You can pick up a very large and heavy house by just the one hole.  It's about balancing it when you pick it up.  It helps distribute the weight more evenly.  Making it feel lighter than it really is.  HA!  It's an illusion!  Okay!  NOT!  It just feels like it's easier to pick up than it should be.

Did any of that make sense.  If you watch me while I'm setting out my houses, you'll see most of them are picked up by the hole.

Here's a little some thing that I cut out with the plasma cutter Thursday night.  When I did this I couldn't figure out why I couldn't see what I was doing any more.  WELL!  I took off my welding hat to find ,,, it was dark outside.  I had too much fun and forgot to stop cutting.

Tell me what you think,,,, the idea is to rivet the 2 pieces together ,,, but????  Which way should the metal go???  Rusted on both parts????  Or rusted on one side and not too rusted on the other????

Ramona ... LET ME KNOW!

Part rust?

All rust?

I was just goofing off and didn't measure these.  I just drew them on the metal quickly, then cut them out.  OOPS!  Not quite right, but too fun to throw out!

Time for a movie, some munchies and juice.  Then off to bed to dream about what to make tomorrow!

More Garden Art For the Marysville Show

Hi guys!

Just a quick note and some more flowers for the upcoming Marysville Spring Garden and Craft Show on Saturday, April 13th.

You know how some times you're on a roll and don't want to stop.  WELL!  That was me yesterday.  Then I ran out of wire for my little mig welder.  SO!  This morning I went and got some more!  Put it in and CRAP!  The new wire doesn't like my welder.  SO!  By the time 3 hours had gone by and I had one whole piece done!  I finally went inside and called the guys I got the wire from.  I don't normally do this ,,, BUT!  I couldn't stop.  I was furious!  I spent $50 plus and the damn thing killed my welder.  Well, it did.  Kind of.  Okay!  What a whiner I was today.  I'm taking it into the shop tomorrow to see what happened.  What a mood killer!

SO!  Here's all I got done today.  THE WHOLE DAY!  darn!!!!

2 sweet babies!  Notice one does not have a sewer snake on it?

For some reason I keep cutting out 4 petal flowers.
I really wanted 5 petals on each!
Oh well!  Still fun!!!!

Metal roofing, a fun bowl that looks like leaves, a car part, an old door knob and rebar.

Metal roofing, the cover from an excavators smoke stack,
the bottom of a vintage metal flower pot, sewer snake and rebar.

These are from last year.  The bottom of one of these pots was rusted out.  SO!  I used it on the flower above!

As you can see I didn't get too far today.  After I came in and barked at the poor guy down at the local welding shop, I ate dinner and then went outside to cut out some more large metal roofing flowers.  Hopefully we'll get the welder up and running again tomorrow.  Around here you have to do these things while the weather is good!

Hope you like them!

By the way,,, which do you like better ,,,  with or without the snake on the flower stalk???  Please let me know!  It all helps!

I Played With Snakes Today!!! EEK!

These wonderful SEWER snakes were given to me by a neighbor.  Don't you love it when people look at some thing they clean out sewer drains with and think of you???  EEK!  I think it's a good thing!!!  OKAY!  In this case I know it is!  J

SO!  What do you do with this giant long "spring"???

Why you make flowers and POOP tails.  Think cat tails made from giant springs that go down a pipe to move the stuck poop out!  EWWWWWW  again!!!!!

Okay,,, so these were fun to build.  This is similar to what I built years ago ,,, just a different take on a flower for your garden made from "crap".  OH!  I never realized before that my craptastic stuff would really be made from ,,, okay ,,, here's a few pictures!!!!

These are sewer drain snakes.  A plumber puts these on a machine, shoves them down the sewer pipe, turns on the machine.  Now the machine turns this around and around while being shoved down the pipe.  It loosens things up so they can flow down the pipe again.

A close up.  I guess you could call these shit disturbers!

I used a portion of one snake to give the stalk of this flower a different texture from my normal rebar.

Close up.
Shower head, water knob, tin roof sheeting, rebar, sewer snake.

Poop Tails.
At each end of the snake is a connector.  There are 2 different types.  This way you can connect 2 snakes together for a longer length.

Close up.  I know!  It's dirty.
One week in our rain and it'll be clean!!!

Another flower.   A fancy metal plate, metal roofing, a part off the underside of a car, a motor, sewer snake, rebar.

Close up!  You can't see it very good in the picture, but, the motor is mostly brass and copper.  It will develop a wonderful patina outdoors!

My monsters were missing for a while tonight.  They are best buds and on top of a cabinet in the bathroom!  ON MY CLEAN TOWELS!!!  Juliet, left, is getting big!  Macs is her protector!

By the way ,,, I cut out the metal roofing into flower shapes with a plasma cutter.  No, I didn't clean up the edges.  Yes, they are a little sharp in a few places.  If I cleaned them up they wouldn't have that same look around the edges.  I really like that look.  AND Trust me here ,,, the birds will love this stuff to land on anyway!

OKAY!  These will be at the Marysville Garden show coming up Saturday April 13th!  More pictures of what's coming as I get stuff made!   FINALLY!!!!

Why I Pick Up Junk!

Hi guys!

How's it going???  Around here it's going pretty darn good!  I like it when that happens.

So, lately Joy and I have had some pretty wet weather.  I know, I know!  I live in Washington state.  NO, it does not rain here every day.  Just 2 out of 3!  EEK!  And this winter has been so soggy.  Much wetter than normal.   The "path" from the house to the garage is one long mud bath.  NOT NICE!!!

Because it's been so wet we didn't get out as much as we normally do.  So, it took us 3 weeks (instead of our normal 2 weeks) of picking up cans and a day of picking up scrap metal and we were off to the recycler just down the road.  Now, I can take this into Seattle and make more money.  BUT!  It costs more to go too.  So for me,,, one mile from home is plenty far enough!!!

This is why I go!

My truck with just scrap steel, copper and brass in it.

Here are some buckets filled with the small stuff.
I find it easier to dump it this way.

This was my first trip.  I have a small Ford Ranger pickup.  I had no idea when I bought the truck 14 years ago that I would ever haul some of the things I do!

Nothing but aluminum.

This was my second trip.

Total dollars made????   $119!

Not bad for a few hours work.  Remember, Joy and I walk nearly every day through the alleys near our house.  Yep!  Some times in the rain.  We usually walk any where from 1/2 mile to 1 1/2 miles.  Some times we bend over and pick up a few cans or some scrap metal.  By the time we get through with our walk we add any where from 5 minutes to 15 minutes extra when we pick up stuff.  So we really aren't working too hard.

It's every where out there people.  This just paid for a full tank of gas, my  GARBAGE  bill, a nice lunch and a latte at Starbucks.

Some thing to ponder next time you see junk laying around!  :)

One Of My Favorite Finds!

Hi guys!

SO!  It's Wednesday morning about 7 am and the rain is coming down like crazy!  YAY!  WELL!  Kind of.  You see Wednesdays are garbage days around here.  This is the day Joy and I find most of "the good stuff" in our alleys.  SO!  I rolled over and went back to sleep for all of half an hour and Macs let me know it was time to get up no matter what the weather was like.  CRAP!  Okay!

So I finally got it in gear and of course by now the recycle garbage truck was already past our house.  OOPS!  Well, kind of.  You see for some reason he picks up the recycle bins on the east, west and north of me.  NOT down my alley that heads south.  Love this guy!!!

SO!  Joy and I take off.  The rain is barely coming down and we're scoring left and right on aluminum cans.  That's a good thing!  BUT!  The rain is starting to come down harder and harder.  We are now 4 blocks from home and it's really coming down.  SO!  We headed down one more block because I know there will be at least 1 if not 2 full 13 gallon garbage bags of cans in just 2 bins!  Love my neighbors and their choice of bottle or can!  :)

Don't ask me why, but I turned left instead of right.  I was kicking myself half a block later when the skies opened up and poured.  O. M. G.  I do know better, but, some times shit happens.  SO!  I figured as soaked as we were another half block wouldn't kill either of us.

Joy and I nearly ran home!
The score of the year!!!  Well, this year!

As soon as we got home I dried Joy off, gave her her morning vitamin, grabbed 2 dog treats and she headed for her kennel.  YAY!  She kenneled up and I took off.  YEP!  It was still there and the rain was still coming down.  Like that mattered any more.

By the time I got it home the rain had stopped and the sun was trying to come out!  YAY!!!!

You have to love it when things go right.  Today!  They went right.

Very nice!

The screen can use a little work and the duct tape that held the free sign took off some paint.  Both very fixable!

I do love my alleys and my neighbors idea of garbage.

Have you found any thing lately???  Some times the smallest are the best.  This is one of those finds that come once in a lifetime.

Have a good one and thanks for stopping by!  Shell

The Little Truck That Couldn't, But Did!

Hi guys!
How's it going???  Are you ready for some spring like weather???  We sure are over here... OH WAIT!  That's all we had for most of this past winter!  The weather here was mild and wet.  YUCK!!!
SO!  Ready to hit the garden?  Ready to do some planting???  I am!
After the last post and planting some hubcaps,,, I thought I'd show you a little truck I found the other day at the recycle center.  It cost me a whopping $1!!!!
Do you ever see those fun, rusted old metal dump trucks and think ,,, Gee!  If it only had a tail gate I could put some plants in it???  HA!  Here's what you do when that happens!!!
Not a real antique, but cute just the same.
No tail gate though!

Find a license plate, an old metal sign or even a plain piece of metal.  This plate matches pretty good,
but it doesn't have to!

Bend that plate until it thinks it wants to fit.
Then cut it so it will!

Keep workin' it!  It'll fit sooner or later!

Not pretty, but it won't show once the flowers take off!
I did put 4 pop rivets in this to hold the plate in place.
You could use nails or screws if you have them.
Just drill a hole and shove one of them through.

I added some wet newspaper as my liner,
then filled it with dirt.

Add your plants and you are done!
These came from out in the woods near my sisters house!

Give this a couple weeks to get healthy again.
Then a month and it'll fill out and be gorgeous!

drip, drip, drip, dr .... etc

If you need any help figuring this out,,, just drop me a note.

Think of all the fun stuff you have around your yard that you could turn into a planter.  If you have one and can't figure out how to make it work,,, drop me a note!  :)

OKAY!  One more to come this week!  I'm out of dirt!  Gotta get the shovel out and see where I can find some more!  WHAT????  Pay for it???  Are you kidding???  No way!  Not me!  Why?  Save your money for some thing much more fun!

Have a good one and thanks for stopping by!  Shell
